A gauntlet laying beginning to the London Collections: On the Joshua Kanecatwalk. Joshua Kane, renowned for his impossibly intricate yet undeniably masculine tailored silhouettes, did not disappoint the gaggle of models, beautiful people and Made in Chelsea cast members sat FROW.
The only presence more jaw-dropping than the models – themselves a motley crew of Joshua’s nearest, dearest and prettiest – were the clothes. As Joshua’s talents extend to jewellery and accessories design, we saw coordinating cravats, cuffs and ties in Kane’s signature polka dot print, silks scarves caped over pea-coats and fob-chains so beautiful I hope every man will want to wear one. There is nothing better than a man in a fob-chain, except if he is carrying one of Kane’s AW15 umbrellas. With their twisting Baroque handles they are part pimp stick, part umbrella and wholly 18th century dandy walking stick. Oscar Wilde himself would have wept with desire.
Kane cited his influence for the show as ‘rakish gentleman explorer Percy Fawcett’ and this dandyish influence showed in the models’ androgyny. The suits of oversize hounds tooth and windowpane-check prints worked on models of both sexes. Kane’s talent lies in his ability to make both men and women believe that they are able – and deserve – to wear a three-piece suit, and will be empowered by it. Perhaps we should make them mandatory every time a person leaves the house.
